Considering his previous experience in EWF and the family musical lineage, some of it may have come as naturally as breathing. On the other hand a thought process was at work strongly at the same time.
Well aware of some of the new electronics working their way into all things funk in the late 's- in instrumentation and production, both Laws and Larry Dunn who himself was facing a similar issue with EWF realized there needed to be a way to not only reflect these changes but do so by somehow strengthening the basic sound they had. And the result shows up on Ronnie's third Blue Note release here. From the start this album produces some of the highest quality funk Ronnie Laws ever made with the high octane, electronic space funk of "Goodnite Ride","Nuthin' Bout Nuthin'" and "New Nuthin Bout Nuthin - Ronnie Laws - Friends And Strangers . In addition to the typically fine performances from Laws,Dunn and Roland Bautista on guitar special props also go to Donnie Beck on bass-whose percussive style of slapping keeps the grooves and melodies flowing endlessly.
The title song,"Saturday Evening" and the high stepping melodicism of "Life In Paradise" showcase the backup vocals of Ronnie's sisters Eloise and Debra.
Musically these songs have a stronger funky soul edge to them-a little milder than the more high octane funk jams here but still hard driving non the less. The album ends with Law's own "Same Old Story",a smooth groove with an entrancing melody and "Just Love",co-written with Larry Dunn with a somewhat progressive electronic edge even for this type of album.
This particular album Nuthin Bout Nuthin - Ronnie Laws - Friends And Strangers very well be a candidate for Ronnie Laws best 70's album. And it's also quite possible he never made a bad album during that decade at all. Somehow though on this one,the airbrushed sci-fi cover art doesn't serve as some late 70's disco era gimmick;let's just put it that way. It invites you into a world where you have a sound that's both very alive, very organic and yet somehow very constructed and full of technological innovations new to Ronnie's music.
So if your looking at this cover and somehow expect life to imitate art with a lot of space grooves, than that's exactly what your going to get with this. Also Nuthin Bout Nuthin - Ronnie Laws - Friends And Strangers a lot of funk as well:while there are many different types of grooves in music it's funk that one will be dealing with as the main event.
In fact that funkiness very much defines what this album is musically and that's why it might be my personal favorite of his from this period of his career. I love all of the songs in this CD. I enjoy listening to this CD over and over again. I like the Laws family Ronnie, Hubert and Debra.
