The Somberlain is the debut album by Swedish black metal band Dissectionreleased on December 3, It proved to be a highly influential release for both black metal and melodic death metal. The band dedicated the album to Euronymouswho had been murdered in August the same year. This is the only album that features the band's original lineup. The Somberlain - Dissection - The Somberlain album was composed and arranged between andand was recorded between March 1 and 6 of According to No Clean Singing"Dissection made their name by infusing their black metal with a layer of melody which ensured that each The Somberlain - Dissection - The Somberlain was memorable, together with strong musicianship and compelling lyrics and imagery.

By keeping most of their NWOBHM -isms in the minor scale, they maintained a sense of darkness and foreboding over the blasting, thrashing framework of technically-proficient black metal. Unlike their peers, however, Dissection looked beyond the atonal seethings of Under The Sign of the Black Marktaking direction from Quorthon 's later, more epic A Simple Thing Like Cry - Diana Ross - Surrender. She described the album as "steeped in the sinister miasma of black metal's ethos", while noting that the band "discarded less of metal's traditional tropes than their contemporaries.

Black Lodge also released a special edition set in limited to copies, packaged in a wooden box along with a T-shirt and a sticker. The album was re-released most recently in by The End Records in a two-disc set, containing the original album, an unreleased live recording fromthe Into Infinite Obscurity EP froma demo fromThe Grief Prophecy demo froma rehearsal fromand the Satanized rehearsal from All content is remasteredpackaged in a slipcaseThe Somberlain - Dissection - The Somberlain is touted as the "Ultimate Reissue".

Though the album has often been overshadowed by the band's following album Storm of the Light's BaneThe Somberlain has been well received by music critics and fans. Singular, unforgettable melodies overlay sinuous, quick-draw dynamics. Dual harmonies are perfectly executed in rapid-fire waves. He also argued that "For most band's, a CD like this would be their さよならストレンジャー - くるり* - さよならストレンジャー, but with Dissection, it's just another album, not to mention their debut.

Somberlain Lyrics: I fell deeper and deeper as light now was gone / I could feel the dark embrace my soul / Agony was no more, and so was pain / At this point of solitude I knew I was there.

But don't be fooled, the title track, "The Somberlain", slows it down, bringing you to the dark, melodic world that Dissection had aimed to create with this album. This song is a highlight of the album, it shows that Dissection knew how to write a great melodic track without it being overly cheesy and ripping apart the somber atmosphere of this album/5.

“The Somberlain” is also Dissection’s last full-on black metal release, as “Storm Of The Light’s Bane” introduced the band’s further exploration into melodic death metal territory. Generally speaking, this is a solid melodic black metal release that exudes a strong heavy metal influence and seems to, in a way, create the outlines of the melodic death metal sound as we know it today.

This album is eternally dedicated to the memory of Euronymous and the cursed Mayhem. The introduction to Black Horizons starts with a phrase being played backwards, that phrase is "Frost is spreading across the plain to welcome the eternal night". This phrase is later used as a lyric on their song Where Dead Angels Lie, on their next album Storm of the Light's Bane.
